RIT wins Hearthstone college title at Full Sail

A team from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York took home the fall title in the collegiate championships of Hearthstone, a tournament held at Full Sail University earlier this month.

The online digital collectible card game from Blizzard Entertainment has grown in popularity and drew the top four teams to Winter Park.

In Hearthstone, players build a deck of digital cards that are based in the popular World of Warcraft universe.

Players and teams use cards from their constructed decks to battle those of their opponents, with specific traits of the characters in the card determining who comes out on top.

FIEA team targets showcase at GDC

A team of FIEA students hope to take their video game, “Malediction,” to the Intel Showcase at Game Developers Conference in March.

The adventure title puts players in the role of a wizard doing battle with his clones.

It was built during the school’s most recent session, which saw students produce four video games.

Full Sail to host Hearthstone college title meet

The college championship of Blizzard’s esports competition of Hearthstone is coming to The Fortress.

Full Sail University and Blizzard officials announced Friday that the school’s dedicated competitive gaming venue would host the event in Saturday, Dec. 14.

The finals will be played on the newly released Descent of Dragons expansion, which launches Tuesday.

Florida Poly students showcase video games at expo

It’s not just UCF and Full Sail University training the next generation of video game developers in Central Florida.

While those two consistently rank at or near the top in national studies that rank schools’ game dev programs, the relatively new Florida Polytechnic University has launched its own program.

This week, the school had an expo to show off what the 30 students in Florida Poly’s game design classes have built during the past several months.

4 teams from UCF’s FIEA video game school to showcase games

Students at the University of Central Florida’s video game school will show off the titles they have been building this semester early next month.

The quartet of projects will include a virtual reality video game, a puzzle-solving platformer, a treasure quest game and a movie created using the Unreal Engine.

The groups at the Startup Showcase will exhibit their games at noon on Dec. 11 at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, 500 W. Livingston St.

3 industry pros receive Full Sail hall of fame nods

Three video game professionals were among the six Full Sail University alumni named to the Winter Park school’s Hall of Fame class of 2019.

Erin Eberhardt of Blizzard Entertainment, sound designer Mark Kilborn and Insomniac Games’ head of technology Shaun McCabe will be inducted in a March ceremony.
