Magic Gaming set to tip off 2020 with lofty goals, ‘chip on their shoulder’

Magic Gaming comes into the 2020 season with an interesting mix of high expectations and a chip on their shoulder.

The squad last year missed the NBA 2K League’s postseason by just one game, finishing 9-7 and dropping a key matchup with Grizz Gaming on the season’s final day.

But that team was reshuffled.

Out are Emmanuel “UCManny” Cruz, Cameron “KingCamRoyalty” Ford and Tucker “TuckerLocksUp” Henry.

In are former Pistons GT center Robert “May” May, former Celtics Crossover standout Alex “Profusion” Snowden and Daniel “djbama” Burge.

The new-look squad will take on Bucks Gaming Wednesday night in its year 3 season opener. The Bucks finished last season 8-8.

“We feel ready,” said Magic Gaming head coach Jonah Edwards. “I don’t want to say we are hitting our stride because I don’t think this is the peak yet.”

The lengthy quarantine caused around the league by the coronavirus pandemic has helped the team connect more quickly.

But some of these guys already knew each other so they really didn’t need much in the way of game time, Edwards said.

“We have a team that is so competitive,” he said. “I have no question that on Wednesday the guys are going to wake up and be hungry.”

The NBA 2K League tipped off its third season on Tuesday, as all four games ended in two-match sweeps.

76ers Gaming Club, which lost in the fifth and deciding game of the 2019 championships, started its rebound season by getting trashed by Raptors Uprising 103-67 and 79-55 in a season-opening sweep.

Warriors Gaming, Cavs Legion and Mavs Gaming also swept their opponents, meaning they all start the season at 1-0.
