Mayhem return to action in Overwatch League with two weekend matches

The Florida Mayhem travel to Houston this weekend for a pair of matches as they try to improve on their 1-1 record.

The Mayhem start its weekend with a 3 p.m. match Saturday against New York Excelsior (3-1), which has a 10-4 map record and sits in fourth place in the league.

The squad is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Houston on Sunday, which helped Excelsior earn a weekend split.

The Mayhem follows that yo with a match against the London Spitfire (1-2).

The Spitfire picked up its first win last week and has a 4-8 map record.

Florida, meanwhile comes off a bye week after splitting a pair of matches two weeks ago.

Mega Man music concert takes over The Abbey on Saturday

A concert featuring bands that play music related to the Mega Man video game series will roll into Orlando on Saturday night.

The concert presented by Ongaku Overdrive, which last year hosted a concert with bands playing music from Final Fantasy, will start at 7 p.m. at The Abbey music venue at 100 S. Eola Drive.

The show will feature local rapper EyeQ, Tampa-based DJ RoboRob, hip hop emcee Richie Branson and Danimal Cannon, a video game music composer and chip tune rock artist.

Athens, Ga.,-based Bit Brigade will headline the show.

Magic Gaming releases 2020 schedule, will host 2 events in Orlando

Magic Gaming released its 2020 schedule Thursday, revealing that the league’s opening Tipoff tournament will be held March 24 to 28.

The Orlando squad will also host two events at Full Sail University: a round-robin tournament that will include the Hornets, Heat and Hawks teams and tips off May 23 and a rivalry matchup with New Jersey on June 27.

Magic Gaming lands former Celtics player in draft

The Magic Gaming squad finished its 2020 look Saturday, drafting a two-year veteran who head coach Jonah Edwards said he had targeted in the league’s first year.

Alexander “Profusion” Snowden, an explosive shooting guard who last season averaged 16 points and shot more than 50 percent from 3, was the first player chosen by the Magic, who picked him in the second round.

Magic Gaming followed that up by selecting Daniel “djbama” Burge in Round 4.

On life support, Mutineers rally for epic run to title match in Atlanta

The Florida Mutineers used a literal last-second victory to catapult them on a run in Atlanta this weekend that ended with a loss in the championship match to the host team Faze.

The showing earned them 30 points and pushed them into fifth place three events into the Call of Duty League’s inaugural season. The Mutineers have only participated in two of the events so far.

The team had to rally after dropping its opening match to the London Royal Ravens 3-1 in the initial double-elimination portion of the schedule.

NBA 2K League draft: Magic Gaming has ‘unfinished business’ as 2020 season approaches

Magic Gaming feels it has unfinished business, a year after finishing one slot out of the postseason.

On Saturday, the squad starts its journey toward the playoffs at the NBA 2K League’s draft in New York City.

Head coach Jonah Edwards said the third year for the league will be crucial.

“It’s vitally important,” he told The OVG. “We are a growing league. We have done a good job of finding ways to evolve, even expanding internationally this year.”

Mayhem creep up 2 spots in ESPN’s 1st Overwatch League rankings since 2020 debut

The Florida Mayhem (1-1) couldn’t break the top half of the 20-team league in the first rankings released after the squad split a pair of matches in Philadelphia this weekend.

But their performance against the Philadelphia Fusion (2-0) and Houston Outlaws (0-2) did push them up two spots from No. 15 to No. 13 in ESPN’s coaches poll this week.

Florida Mayhem fans “light it Up” for new squad in season opener

A complete overhaul of Florida Mayhem’s roster in the Overwatch League paid off, at least on opening night.

The last-place team from last year on Saturday busted out of the gates strong, comfortably sweeping the Houston Outlaws in their season-opening match.

However, the excitement was quickly doused on the second day, when the Mayhem were swept by Philadelphia Fusion.

Tampa Bay Lightning brings NHL 20 tourney to Full Sail

WINTER PARK – An 18-year-old Montreal Canadiens fan took home the top prize in an NHL 20 esports tournament hosted by the Tampa Bay Lightning at Full Sail University on Saturday.

Samuel Landry, playing under the handle Canadiens27, swept a best-of-three series from one of the best players in the world to nab the $2,500 top prize.

He defeated Erik Tammenpää of Finland, the top-ranked-player in the world last summer, 6-3 and and 7-3 in consecutive games.
